How to Use an STP Device
A stand to pee device allows trans men to use the urinals in a mens room. Learn how to stand to pee by using a store-bought or homemade STP device.
Many FTMs find that STP’ing is one of the most noteworthy and liberating experiences of their transition. Some guys find that it comes naturally to them, others have more trouble.
Homemade STP Devices
A home-made STP device can be made with a baby medicine spoon, available at your local Drugstore for only $1-$3. Gerber brand sells a larger one medicine spoon with a more squared receptacle. This is an affordable way to begin and there is no shipping and handling payment. Make sure to buy several of them because eventually they will come in handy. Also, if you’re trying to pass all the time make sure to put one in your car (in a ziploc bag for cleanliness) just in case you forget to bring it.
Medicine spoon
Materials
1 Medicine spoon
1 Razor blade
1 Marker
1 Lighter
- Draw the angle of the slant / downward
- Then, take a lighter and heat up the end of the funnel around what you will cut off. This thins out the plastic and makes it simple to cut through.
- Use a razor blade (more reliable than a knife) and cut along the marked edge
- Finally, take the lighter and heat up the edges so that there are no sharp points.
Once you have the device made, it is time to practice. You may choose the shower, bathtub, or the toilet, whichever suits you best. I recommend that beginners get naked and get in the shower. You will learn very quickly that you have to watch where the urine goes because the speed it comes out really does make a difference. Keep your feet about a foot or more apart and make sure that the spoon portion of the STP-D cover your urethra completely–to make sure you don’t dribble, hold it tight against yourself, otherwise, you may have some explaining to do when you step out of the bathroom. For beginners, it is good to just test the method out a little bit. What I mean is, don’t go when you really have to go because the speed will make it more difficult for you to learn. This is a lot like peeing in a cup for the doctor, you just gotta make sure that the spoon portion, like the cup, covers and captures everything.
When you’re done give it a little shake just like the guys and wash it off in the sink. If you are in the mens room slip it under your shirt sleeve when walking to the sink and pretend to pull it out of your pocket or if the environment is threatening, then just stick it in your pocket and wash it off later.
Coffee Can Lid
Another way to pee is to use the lid of a small coffee can. Make sure to flip it so that the edge is smooth or else you’ll have a bit of clean up to do. This method can actually be a bit more predicable in my opinion, but everyone will have a favorite. When using either of the methods, you are going to need to fool around with the pressure a little bit before being able to master the method. Be patient and give it time because the more you try, the better you’ll get. I have also read that a turkey baster works too.
Store-bought STP Devices
There is a product available at most outdoor stores called the freshette. The Freshette is for women who hike, but hey, let’s be creative. The downside to this product is that it is rather large. The good side is, is that it has a large cup on it to catch the urine, which makes it easier in the beginning, but who really wants to carry this thing around? The Freshette sells for around $20.
Tips and Tricks for using an STP Device
- Always raise the toilet bowl seat.
- Be aware that the worse you have to pee, the longer and faster the stream will be. This isn't as big of a factor with the urinals because it doesn't matter how far the stream goes, but if you have to pee really bad, just chuck it up and go to a stall because that damn stream can be damn unpredictable.
- Unbutton your pants for a more reliable method.
