2 Months on Testosterone
Diary of a trans man who has been through 2 months of testosterone injections
March 3, 2005 : 2 Months on Testosterone Injections
2 Months on testosterone Voice Change
There haven’t been quite as many changes the second month as there were the first. My face is still greasy, but the acne issues seem to have balanced. I have little dots of acne that run down the back of my neck along my hairline. It is not very noticeable. I am trying to control the issue of generally feeling greasy and dirty by showering more often. I generally bathe twice a day and wash my face several times in between. The loofah sponge comes in handy for keeping my skin smooth.
The libido change has been tolerable; I’m more sensitive and can become uncomfortable, but it’s not nearly as bad as I expected.
The hair around my ankles has thickened and grown in length. I’ve also noticed some new hair just under my belly button. I used to pluck my eyebrows very often which left an area where the eyebrows would not grow. They seem to be filling in.
My voice has continued to raise and drop. The most recent drop occurred today.
I have become more comfortable with injecting at home. Jesse is very good about doing the injections. She has become incredibly supportive and is watching the changes with a smile.
Dr. Smith upped my dose of testosterone again. I complained of a “dead period” about two days before my injection when I would feel as if the hormone was not in my body. I am now injecting every 10 days.
The last several weeks have been a blast. Everywhere I go people seem to think that I am a junior-high school boy. At the auto body shop, a man turned to me and said “Are you old enough to drive?”
I looked at the man and said “yes, I’ve been driving for a long time.” He then asked my age, I replied, 21. He slapped his hand on the table burst out laughing and said “You look like you ’bout twelve years old!”
Another time that this happened was at the jewelry store when I went to pick up my new ring. I mentioned I needed to pick up my order, which was placed under my legal female name, Jacki. She asked if I that was me, I said yes. She shook her head, looked at the counter-top and said “I can’t give you the ring without identification.” When I pulled out my ID she had this dumbfounded look on her face–it was clear she thought I was trying to steal someone else’s ring. I walked out of the store with it on my finger.
Twice this last week I went out with my dad to shop for laptops. At one store in particular the salesman said “When your son gets old enough to go to college, he can buy you Microsoft Office for real cheap.” I said, “I am in college, I’m actually a Junior.” His response, “Y’all look younger and younger every year!” Well, the rest of the hour at this store the man kept referring to me as “Sir,” “He,” and “Son.” As we were leaving the man shook my fathers hand and said “You’ve got a good looking son sir.”
Another time we were at Fry’s and I happened to mention my work to the salesman. He looked a bit perplexed and asked my age with a critical eye. Once again he responded about how young I looked right in front of my parents.I’m going to have to get my name changed on my license soon.
Many of the men and women who have checked my ID have been hesitant to take my order. I believe that they 1) think it is a fake ID; 2) Think I’m 13 years old; 3) Wondering why the ID says my female name and I look so male. My ID was checked even to buy cigarettes!
