1 Year on Testosterone
My female to male transition. Reflections after 1 year on testosterone and becoming a man
January 7, 2006 : 1 Year on Testosterone
I can hardly believe that an entire year has passed. The first several months on hormones was a day-by-day process of looking and hoping for new changes. After that, I became more comfortable in my body and I didn’t dwell on every little hair as much. Around 5 Months, I began to pass fully as a man everywhere I went; I was never mistaken for a woman (except when going to the lesbian bar around the corner!). It was also at that time that my face began to fill out and my muscles started to define themselves. By 10 Months, the amount of hair on my body had quadrupled and I had grown out of the 12-year old boy appearance.
After one year on testosterone I appear as unmistakably male. Hair has filled in on my calves, thighs, belly, and face. Unfortunately I have yet to grow any “true” facial hair, but it is very clearly that it’s on its way. My erotic desires have increased exponentially and I have found that my energy level has skyrocketed. I eat double the amount of food but have lost a great amount of my body fat and have gained muscle in its place. Although I still have a lot of weight left on my hips, however they have slimmed down a lot.
Emotionally I can not be doing better. I am more self-assured and proud. I no longer look at my body and criticize it so much. I feel like I am able to interact with the world on an entirely new level. If I could go back and correct my mistakes, I would have pushed for this change much earlier in my life. I would have liked to begin the process as early as possible and avoid the sting of adolescence. In many ways, being trans has given me a broader perspective on life.
On January 5, 2006, just shy of my one year on testosterone anniversary, I had my chest surgery performed by Doctor Peter Raphael. As a surgeon, he was all we could have asked for and more. Jesse, my mom, and I traveled the four hour drive to Plano, Texas (just North of Dallas) and settled down in an extended stay motel for the week. The surgery was performed without any complications and my self-perception boosted drastically. Prior to the surgery it seemed like my breasts were a constant reminder of my femininity. I feel much more comfortable now–not to mention that I no longer have to bind my breasts down.
I will no longer be posting as many photos under the T-Diary pages. I will still post face, arms, and legs pics but I will only do full photo documentation every six months.
